Before the Dinosaurs Earth began 4,600 million years ago. It's a long history divided into different period during an amazing variety of life forms developed or died out. In the beginning, single-celled algae and bacteria formed or evolved in the warm seas that covered most of the planet. When plants and animals first appeared on land, they were eaten by amphibians that had evolved from fish with lungs and strong fins. Some amphibians then evolved into reptiles that did not lay their eggs in water. Early reptiles developed into turtles and tortoises, lizards, crocodiles, birds and the first dinosaurs. They then dominated the world for millions of years. The term "dinosaur" means "terrible lizard", was invented in 1841 by Sir Richard Owen, a famous British scientist. He was the first person to realise that these fascinating reptiles were different from living reptiles and should be placed in a separate group. Why Did They VANISH??? The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was the most mysterious and dramatic disappearance of a group of animals in the history of the Earth. But the dinosaurs were not the only animals to die out. More than half of the world's animals also disappeared, including the pterosaurs and large marine reptiles. Some scientists believe that a volcanic disaster or a giant meteorite wiped out the dinosaurs. Other argue that such a disaster-causing disease, rising sea levels and gradual changes in climate would have affected all animal life. Another theory combines these thoughts: changes in weather and sea levels had already reduced the amount of land and food for dinosaurs, and they were unable to cope with a sudden disaster.
