Strong and indomitable, Kochi Castle symbolizes the spirit and cultural heritage of Kochi and Japan. It is a structural masterpiece that lies as a testament to its founder, Yamauchi Katsutoyo. It took only ten years and thousands of men and boys to build it. Ironically, even though the castle was built to last against enemies, it has never been attacked except by Meiji reformers who wanted to remove all symbols of feudalism during the start of the Meiji Era (1868). Thus, it has survived for 400 years but some of its inner buildings were destoryed not by attacking marauders but by civilians.
